Just off the coast of Georgia, Jekyll is a barrier Island and a part of the state’s Golden Isles. Measuring only seven miles long and a mile and a half wide, indigenous people called the Guale, originally inhabited the island, but began to be aggressively replaced by private land owners. Development came in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, but was brought to a halt during WWII due to a government ordered evacuation. The state purchased Jekyll in 1947 for both preservation and security, and since, the island has become a popular tourist destination. The historic portions of the island boast the 1742 tabby ruins of the Horton House, the Island Club Hotel, and several “cottages” built by wealthy. On the ocean side, Driftwood Beach is an amazing example of erosional effects, salt air, and a bleaching sun, leaving fallen ancient live oaks and pines to litter the shore. Jekyll Island’s history, rich heritage, and shorescapes inspired this series called, Jekyll, Home of the Guale.
